Aussie Computer Scientist Claims He is the Inventor of Bitcoin

Through a coordinated media event, the Australian computer scientist Craig Steven Wright today claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of Bitcoin.

Geeky eyebrows have been raised over Craig Wright's "admission" that he is the creator of bitcoin - up until now, only known by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

The New York Times[1] said[2] it had received an email from Gregory Maxwell, one of Bitcoin's developers, referring to the so-called proof provided by Dr Wright saying: " It demonstrates no connection between this person and Bitcoin's creation".

Bitcoin Foundation director Gavin Andresen[3], who took over the project when Mr Nakamoto disappeared in 2011, vouched for the authenticity of Mr Wright's claim.

Wright gave interviews to the BBC[4], the Economist[5], and GQ, and provided proof to the[6] BBC by using coins that are known by other Bi tcoin users to be owned only by the currency's creator.

The evidence in question is a signed digital message used in the first-ever bitcoin transaction.

Wright added that he chose the name "Nakamoto" after Tominaga Nakamoto, a 17th-century philosopher from Japan. If he is indeed Nakamoto, Wright is a wealthy man, because "Nakamoto" holds the equivalent of about $450 million in Bitcoins.

Craig Wright claimed on Monday to be the creator of the peer-to-peer payment system Bitcoin.

By going public, Wright is looking to put an end to media speculation on who Satoshi Nakamoto really is.

Since Bitcoin's inception, Satoshi Nakamoto is believed to have accumulated more than one million bitcoins. "Some people will believe, Some people won't, and to tell you the truth, I don't really care", he said. Bitcoin fell more than 3 percent after news of Wright's claims, from $454.89 to below $440, before recovering slightly.

Bitcoin's value is determined by how much people are willing to pay for it, and other market forces, similar to a stock.

Dr Wright said he chose to reveal himself as the Bitcoin creator to stop the spread of "misinformation" about the cryptocurrency and its digital infrastructure Blockchain.

Wright told The Economist[7] he would exchange bitcoin slowly to avoid pushing down its price.

"After spending time with him, I am convinced beyond a reasonable doubt: Craig Wright is Satoshi", Mr. Andresen wrote[8].

In December 2015, however, following reports from Gizmodo[9] and Wired[10], Wright's home was raided by Australian police after he was named by the two to be Bitcoin's founder.
