Two Bridgeport men charged in computer thefts

MONROE — Two Bridgeport men were arrested Tuesday after police said a laptop stolen from a Captains Hill Road[1] home last August was found in the home of one of the suspects.

A Monroe resident had filed a complaint on Aug. 4 that someone had entered his unlocked vehicle sometime during the night and stole a work laptop and related items worth more than $1,400, police said. "A surveillance camera set up on the victim's home showed the car was entered by an unknown subject shortly after midnight,'' Lt. Rosalie Stuart[2] said.

Fairfield police had investigated the theft of a laptop and personal items from the Fairfield University[3] library in January, and detectives got a search warrant for the home of one of the suspects, Deshawn Fields[4], Stuart said.

"Among items recovered was the laptop bag belonging to the Captains Hill Road victim,'' the Monroe police spokeswoman said. "Police learned Deshawn Fields and Melson Spruill[5] were together when driving through the Captains Hill Road neighborhood checking if people locked their cars.''

Fields and Spruill turned themselves in after learning of the warrant for their arrest. They were released after posting a $20,000 bond each and will be arraigned April 6 in Superior Court[6].

Fields, 22, faces charges of third-degree burglary and fourth-degree larceny while Spruill, 27, has been charged with conspiracy to commit burglary and larceny and criminal liability for the acts of another.
