HAMBURG -- Hamburg police are warning about a scam involving an "IT" company that cost a local resident $25,000.Police said the scam involved a male calling a resident claiming to be from an IT company and stating that he could see that the resident's computer had a virus."He stated he could remotely access the computer right now and fix it, for a charge of $299. The person agreed and once the software was remotely added to the computer, he then had access to all of the banking and personal information, which led to a loss of over $25,000 when it was all said and done," Hamburg police said on the department's Facebook page.In its warning to residents, Hamburg police said to never give access to a computer or divulge personal information to someone who calls and is not a trusted entity."Should someone contact you indicating a virus is on your computer the best action you can take is to hang up. If you are not sure if there is a problem with your computer take it to a local and trus ted computer repair business. A check for viruses and other issues will cost you less than what was initially paid in this instance," police said.As to this incident, police said, "Unfortunately as is the case with most types of these investigations, arrests or recovery of the funds is very difficult and or impossible as the perpetrators are usually in another country."
