Today was a new first for Bismarck as a young man with cerebral palsy gave a commencement speech for his class at their graduation.
Tyler Schwab, one of this year's graduates from Century High School was diagnosed with cerebral Palsy shortly after birth. A disorder leaving him unable to speak.
"This is the first time someone in Bismarck Public Schools has given a speech using an augmentative communication device. I feel honored to have the opportunity to be this person," Said Tyler Schwab, A commencement speaker.
He auditioned for the right to give a commencement speech for his class.
"The audition went well and they must have liked it because I was chosen to speak," Tyler said.
"That's just so his personality, he's very strong in his opinions and when he wants people to know something he just gets so excited about it. I'm just so happy for him that he got to have this opportunity and now everybody got to here this great message," said Liz Tomek, Tyler's Instructional Aide.
The core message he wanted people to learn from his speech was this:
"You should embrace the things you may not understand to make it a point to understand them. Whether a person may have a disability, or believe in a different religion, or speak another language, we are all the same," said Tyler.
After the ceremony, he was greeted by family and posed for photos to commemorate the occasion.
The CDC estimates that roughly 1-4 out of every 1,000 people are diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy worldwide.
